What is The GOAT Waterproofing Membrane?

The GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) is a flexible, liquid-applied waterproof membrane designed for flat roofs, terraces, balconies, foundations and pipe penetrations. It is a quick-drying reactive polymer that forms a seamless, crack-bridging, solar reflective waterproof coating — available in Black, White and Grey. In its white formulation, The GOAT delivers exceptional solar reflectivity, reducing roof surface temperatures and supporting energy-efficient building design.

Unlike bituminous and torch-on membranes, The GOAT is a liquid-applied flat roof waterproofing membrane that conforms to any surface profile — including upstands, penetrations, drainage outlets and complex details — with no overlaps, laps or joints to fail. It can be applied by brush or roller, works on damp substrates, and requires no primer on most surfaces.

The GOAT holds a European Technical Assessment (ETA) and has been tested for external fire performance, making it suitable for specification on a wide range of residential and commercial projects across the UK.

☀️ Solar Reflective Performance — The White GOAT Cool Roof Advantage

When it comes to solar reflective flat roof membranes, colour is performance. The White GOAT is engineered to reflect solar radiation rather than absorb it — delivering measurable benefits in surface temperature, energy efficiency and substrate longevity.

↑ High
Solar Reflectivity (Albedo)
White GOAT reflects a high proportion of incident solar radiation, reducing heat absorbed by the roof surface
−15°C
Typical Surface Temperature Reduction
Solar reflective cool roofs can reduce surface temperatures by up to 15°C or more vs black membranes
↓ Less
Cooling Energy Demand
Lower roof surface temperatures reduce heat transfer into the building, cutting air conditioning and mechanical cooling loads

The Albedo Effect — How Solar Reflective Roofs Work

Albedo is the measure of how much solar energy a surface reflects. A standard black bituminous flat roof has a very low albedo — it absorbs the majority of solar radiation and converts it to heat. A high-albedo white cool roof membrane like White GOAT reflects that radiation away, keeping the roof surface and the building beneath significantly cooler.

The benefits cascade through the building: lower surface temperatures mean reduced heat conduction through the roof build-up, lower internal temperatures in top-floor spaces, reduced demand on air conditioning systems, lower energy bills, and a longer lifespan for the roof membrane itself (UV and thermal cycling being the primary causes of membrane degradation).

This makes the White GOAT an ideal solar reflective roofing membrane for UK commercial and residential flat roofs — particularly in urban areas affected by the urban heat island effect, and in buildings with large expanses of flat roof area.

Why The GOAT Outperforms Standard Flat Roof Waterproofing

🌡️

Applies at 0°C on Damp Surfaces

Standard waterproofing paints and coatings require dry surfaces and temperatures of 5°C or above. The GOAT applies at 0°C on damp substrates — making it usable year-round on UK sites where weather windows are unpredictable.

🌊

Positive & Negative Water Pressure

The GOAT resists both positive water pressure (water pushing from the outside in) and negative water pressure (water pushing from the inside out) — making it effective on foundations, retaining walls and exposed slab soffits as well as flat roofs.

🔧

Crack-Bridging & Elastic

The reactive polymer formulation is highly elastic and crack-bridging, accommodating thermal movement in the substrate without cracking or delaminating. This makes it far more durable on concrete and masonry than rigid waterproof coatings.

☀️

UV Resistant — Can Be Left Exposed

The GOAT is fully UV resistant and can be left permanently exposed without degradation — unlike many liquid waterproofing systems that require a protection layer or gravel ballast. Ideal for accessible terraces and balconies.

❄️

Freeze-Thaw Resistant

Tested and resistant to repeated freeze-thaw cycles — essential in the UK climate where winter temperatures fluctuate around zero. Performance characteristics are retained even after long-term direct contact with water.

🧪

VOC-Free, Solvent-Free, No Isocyanates

The GOAT is 100% VOC-free and solvent-free, and contains no isocyanates — removing the primary occupational health hazard associated with many two-component polyurethane waterproofing systems. Safe for application near occupied buildings.

Fast Rain Resistant & Quick Drying

The quick-drying reactive polymer formulation becomes rain resistant rapidly after application, reducing the risk of wash-off on exposed rooftop sites and allowing the waterproof seal to be achieved even in variable UK weather conditions.

🔍

Easier Inspection (White Finish)

The white finish of White GOAT makes surface inspection significantly easier. Cracks, defects, ponding and debris are far more visible on a white membrane than on a black or grey finish, enabling proactive maintenance and early intervention.

How to Apply The GOAT Flat Roof Waterproofing Membrane

The GOAT is designed for straightforward application by any competent contractor or confident self-builder. No specialist equipment is required for brush or roller application.

  1. Prepare the substrateRemove loose material, debris, standing water (The GOAT can be applied damp — not pooled). Repair any structural cracks above 5mm before application. Degrease metal substrates if required.
  2. Apply The GOAT Liquid Grommet at penetrationsBefore the main field coat, use The GOAT Liquid Grommet around pipe penetrations, drainage outlets, upstands and any complex details. This ensures full seal at the most vulnerable points.
  3. Apply the first coat by brush or rollerApply The GOAT by brush or roller across the full surface area at the specified rate. Work from the lowest drainage point upward and into upstands and details. Allow to dry.
  4. Apply the second coatApply the second coat perpendicular to the first to ensure even coverage and eliminate any missed spots. Total consumption should be approximately 2kg per m² across both coats.
  5. Inspect and allow to fully cureVisually inspect the finished membrane — the white finish of White GOAT makes this significantly easier. Ensure all areas have consistent coverage before the membrane is exposed to traffic or loaded.

Note: Do not clean equipment with water. Use The GOAT Cleaner for tool cleaning.

Frequently Asked Questions — The GOAT Solar Reflective Roof Membrane

What is a solar reflective flat roof membrane?

A solar reflective flat roof membrane is a waterproof coating that reflects solar radiation rather than absorbing it — reducing roof surface temperatures, lowering heat transfer into the building, and cutting cooling energy use. The White GOAT is a UK-available solar reflective flat roof waterproofing membrane based on a reactive polymer formulation.

Can The GOAT be applied to a damp roof surface?

Yes — this is one of The GOAT's key advantages over competing flat roof waterproofing products. It can be applied directly to damp (not pooled) substrates at temperatures as low as 0°C. This makes it practical for year-round use on UK roofing sites where dry conditions cannot always be guaranteed.

What surfaces can The GOAT be applied to?

The GOAT adheres to concrete, concrete blocks and bricks, plastics, metals (PP, PE, PVC-U) and roofing insulation boards (PUR, PIR, XPS and EPS) — without primer on most surfaces. This covers the full range of substrates found on UK flat roofs and terraces.

How much coverage does The GOAT give per bucket?

The coverage rate is 2kg per m² applied in two coats. An 18kg bucket covers approximately 9m². A 7.5kg bucket covers approximately 3.75m². For large roof areas, contact us to discuss bulk pricing.

Does The GOAT help with BREEAM energy credits or Part L compliance?

Yes. The White GOAT's solar reflectivity reduces heat gain through the roof, lowering the building's cooling energy demand. This supports BREEAM energy credits and contributes to reduced operational carbon in line with Part L 2021 and the Future Homes Standard. It also supports net-zero carbon strategies by reducing dependence on mechanical cooling.

Is The GOAT suitable for green roofs?

Yes. The GOAT provides an effective root-resistant waterproof layer suitable for use beneath extensive and semi-intensive green roof systems. Its elastic, crack-bridging formulation accommodates substrate movement and root pressure. Confirm your specific green roof build-up with our technical team.

Is The GOAT VOC-free and safe near occupied buildings?

Yes. The GOAT is 100% VOC-free, solvent-free and free of isocyanates, making it significantly safer to apply near occupied buildings than solvent-based or two-component polyurethane waterproofing systems. Standard ventilation precautions should still be observed during application.

What colours is The GOAT available in?

Black, White and Grey. For solar reflective cool roof applications, the White GOAT is recommended — it delivers the highest albedo value and greatest surface temperature reduction. Grey provides an intermediate option for projects where white is not aesthetically preferred.

Does The GOAT need a primer?

No primer is required on most substrates including concrete, masonry, insulation boards and most plastics. On some smooth or very dense surfaces a test area is recommended before full application. Contact our technical team if you are unsure.

What certifications does The GOAT hold?

The GOAT holds a European Technical Assessment (ETA) and has been tested for external fire performance. Download the full documentation from the technical data links above.
