If you are adding insulation to a UK home — a loft conversion, a timber frame extension, a flat roof build-up or internal wall insulation — the short answer is almost certainly yes, you need a vapour control layer. A vapour barrier (more accurately called a vapour control layer, or VCL) sits on the warm side of your insulation and stops warm, moist indoor air from travelling into the colder parts of the construction, where it would otherwise condense. Without one, insulation upgrades that look great on paper can quietly cause damp insulation, mould and rotting timber. This guide explains when a VCL is genuinely needed, where it goes, and how modern liquid-applied VCL membranes compare with traditional plastic sheet.

What a vapour barrier actually does

Every occupied home generates moisture: cooking, showering, drying clothes, even breathing. That moisture is carried in warm air and, to a lesser extent, diffuses through building materials as vapour. In winter, the inside of your home is warm and humid while the outer layers of walls and roofs are cold. If moist internal air reaches a surface below its dew point, it condenses — and when that happens inside a wall or roof build-up, it is called interstitial condensation. You cannot see it, but the insulation gets wet, timber stays damp, and problems build up over years.

A vapour control layer manages this by restricting how much moisture can pass from the heated interior into the construction. Combined with proper airtightness — because moving air carries far more moisture than diffusion ever will — a VCL keeps the fabric of the building dry.

When do you need a VCL in the UK?

The situations where a vapour control layer is either essential or strongly recommended include:

  • Insulation upgrades. Any time you add insulation to a roof, wall or floor, you change the temperature profile of the construction. The old inner surfaces become colder, and condensation risk rises. A warm-side VCL is the standard protection.
  • Timber frame construction. Timber frame walls rely on staying dry. UK practice places a VCL on the warm side of the frame to protect the structure and the insulation between studs.
  • Flat roofs. Warm flat roof build-ups need a VCL below the insulation to stop moisture reaching the cold deck or membrane underside, where it has nowhere to escape.
  • Internal wall insulation (IWI). Insulating solid walls from the inside makes the original masonry much colder. Without vapour control on the warm side, moisture migrates into the wall and condenses against it. We cover this in more depth in our guidance on vapour control solutions.

If your project is a simple redecoration with no insulation changes, you generally do not need to add a VCL. The rule of thumb: change the insulation, and you must think about vapour.

The warm-side rule

The golden rule of vapour control in the UK climate is simple: the VCL goes on the warm side of the insulation — the room side. Put it on the cold side and you trap moisture exactly where you do not want it. In a typical wall this means the VCL sits between the insulation and the plasterboard or plaster finish. In a warm flat roof, it sits on the deck below the insulation. Sheet VCL vs vapour barrier paint

Traditionally a VCL meant polythene sheet, lapped and taped at every joint, penetration and junction. Sheet works — but only as well as its weakest tape joint. Every socket, pipe, joist penetration and awkward corner is a potential leak, and on renovation projects with uneven surfaces, sheet is slow and frustrating to detail.

The modern alternative is a liquid-applied membrane — often called vapour barrier paint or airtight paint. What happens without a vapour barrier?

Skipping the VCL rarely shows up immediately, which is exactly why it catches people out. Over the first few winters, interstitial condensation can lead to:

  • Damp, compressed insulation that loses performance;
  • Mould growth behind finishes and around cold junctions;
  • Rot in timber studs, joists and roof decks;
  • Staining, blown plaster and persistent musty smells.
