Containing Asbestos During Removal With A Peelable Coating — Intelligent Membranes

Containing Asbestos During Removal with a Peelable Coating

When asbestos-containing materials are being removed, the priority is stopping fibres escaping into the air. A peelable temporary coating binds and contains them during the works — then comes off cleanly afterwards.

Peelable coating contains fibres during removal

The problem: fibre release during removal

Cutting, stripping or removing asbestos disturbs fibres. Without a way to bind them down, fibres become airborne, putting operatives and occupants at risk and complicating decontamination. Containment during the works is a core part of safe removal under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.

How it differs from encapsulation

Permanent encapsulation seals sound asbestos in place for the long term. This is the opposite job: a temporary coating used during removal to lock fibres down while the material is taken out — then removed with the waste stream.

The solution: a peelable containment coating

Surface Pro (20kg) is a low-odour, solvent-free coating based on natural polymers, brush- or spray-applied. It dries to a flexible, peelable film that contains asbestos during removal works on porous and non-porous indoor surfaces — painted walls, concrete and wallpaper — and removes as a single plastic film within six months, leaving no residue.

How it is used

  • Brush or spray onto the surface (indoor use only)
  • Let it dry to a flexible, peelable film
  • Carry out the removal works with fibres bound down
  • Peel away cleanly afterwards — no residue

Benefits

  • Binds and contains fibres during removal
  • Low-odour, solvent-free; brush or spray applied
  • Peels off clean within six months

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as encapsulation? No — it is a temporary containment film for use during removal, not a permanent seal.

Can it be used outside? It is formulated for indoor use.

For permanently sealing sound asbestos in place, see Encapsulating Asbestos. Always follow the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and use suitably trained operatives.
