Case Study: Up to 30–45% Cooler — The GOAT Solar Reflective Roof Membrane in Dubai

Dubai is where roofs go to suffer. Summer air temperatures push 45°C, and a dark flat roof under that sun doesn't stay at air temperature — it bakes, routinely reaching 80°C or more at the surface. All of that heat has two places to go: down into the building, where the air conditioning has to fight it off kilowatt by kilowatt, and into the roof build-up itself, where daily thermal cycling and relentless UV slowly tear membranes apart. So when we were asked to waterproof a rooftop in Dubai, we didn't just waterproof it. We turned the sun away at the front door.
The project
The roof was a classic hot-climate layout: a flat deck crowded with air-conditioning plant, pipework runs, upstands and parapet walls — exactly the kind of detail-heavy roof where sheet membranes struggle, because every penetration is a seam and every seam is a future leak.
We specified The GOAT in solar reflective white: our cold liquid applied roofing membrane, ETA approved with a 25-year assessed working life. Primed, then two coats spray-applied as one continuous film across the deck, straight up the upstands, around the plant bases and along the pipework supports — no seams, no joints, no torch, no hot works permit. Thickness checked with a wet film gauge as we went, the same discipline we apply on every certified installation.
The result: a roof surface up to 30–45% cooler
This is the number that matters: with The GOAT in solar reflective white, roof surface temperatures run up to 30–45% cooler than a dark roof in the same sun. On this Dubai rooftop the difference was measured on site — the coated surface reading 15°C cooler in the full heat of the day. That's not a lab figure or a manufacturer's projection; that's a thermometer on a real roof in the harshest sun a membrane can face.
A cut like that matters in three ways. The rooms directly below the roof stop cooking, because far less heat is conducted down through the build-up. The air conditioning — the single biggest electricity bill in a Gulf building — works measurably less hard, all day, every day of a summer that lasts most of the year. And the membrane itself lives longer, because UV exposure and thermal shock are what age a flat roof, and a reflective surface takes the sting out of both.
Why a liquid membrane wins in this heat
A "solar reflective paint" brushed over tired felt can bounce some sunlight, but it's still a decoration on a roof that leaks. The GOAT is the opposite: it is the roof. One seamless, fully bonded, flexible waterproofing membrane that happens to be brilliant white — so the reflectivity and the watertightness come as a single system, certified together. Cold-applied, it goes over concrete, felt, asphalt or metal without a naked flame anywhere near the building — which insurers and building managers in dense city plots tend to appreciate.
An honest word
A reflective roof is not a substitute for insulation, and we won't pretend otherwise. What it does is cut solar heat gain at the surface — by up to 30–45%, as this project shows — and protect the waterproofing beneath it. In a hot climate that translates directly into cooler top floors and lower cooling loads; in the UK it's a real answer for buildings that overheat in summer, from plant rooms to top-floor flats to big-shed warehouses. Insulation still does the insulating. The two work together.
