Fleece Tape vs Butyl Tape vs Foil Tape: What to Choose
Choosing between fleece tape, butyl tape and foil tape starts with an easily missed detail: those names describe different parts of a product. Fleece and foil usually describe the facing or backing; butyl describes the sealing compound or adhesive. A tape can therefore be both fleece-faced and butyl-based.

What the three names actually tell you

The overlap is real: illbruck ME404 combines a butyl sealing compound with a non-woven fleece face. Meanwhile, 3M Aluminium Foil Tape 425 combines aluminium foil with an acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive. Neither example establishes a universal rule for everything sold under that material name.
When a fleece surface is useful
A window reveal that will be plastered needs a different finish from an exposed metal joint. A compatible fleece-faced product can provide the transition into the surrounding finish without leaving a shiny tape surface visible.
IM Fleece Tape uses a modified polyamide film and fleece construction with moisture-dependent vapour resistance. Its technical sheet identifies applications on substrates including masonry, timber, uPVC, aluminium-clad windows and steel. Those are product-specific characteristics; fleece alone does not establish airtightness, external suitability or radon resistance. Before ordering, sketch the reveal finish and where the tape will land. Establish the available bonding area on the frame and wall, the route around corners and the finishing sequence. A suitable roll becomes much easier to select once those dimensions are known.
When butyl or foil may be appropriate
Some butyl products are designed for particular membrane joints, metalwork or flashing details. Some are faced; others provide a double-sided seal between layers. Use the named product specified for the assembly, because changing the form of the tape also changes how the joint is made and inspected.
A foil surface can suit specified metal or foil-faced interfaces. However, a bright metallic appearance is not evidence that a roll is approved for the building's air barrier. A product sold for masking or a particular industrial task should not be substituted into an airtightness detail without the relevant performance and compatibility evidence.
Ask a practical question at the merchant's counter: “Where is the detail showing this exact tape on these exact surfaces?” That request is more useful than comparing how sticky two samples feel on a clean worktop.
Compare the detail before comparing the price
- Identify the role. Is the connection part of the air barrier, vapour control layer, external weather seal or a specified gas-protection system?
- Name both surfaces. Include the actual membrane, coating or board finish, rather than writing only “wall”.
- Check the environment. Record installation conditions and how long the joint will remain exposed.
- Plan the finish. Confirm what can cover the tape and whether an intermediate preparation is needed.
- Include the whole job. Compare preparation, primer, labour, tools and waste alongside the roll price.
Keep the selected product and its detail together in the site information. If a substitution is proposed, compare the replacement against those requirements before the order changes. A similar colour, width or facing is not a specification.

Is fleece tape better than butyl tape?
There is no useful universal ranking. The categories can overlap, and suitability depends on the full tape construction and approved application. Choose against the connection detail.
Can I use foil tape around a window?
Only where that particular product is suitable for the frame, wall, movement, moisture design and finish. For a plastered reveal, check the finishing compatibility before buying.
Does an airtight tape replace every other window seal?
